Kilt Size Guide

Ordering the wrong size is the most common kilt mistake — and it's easy to avoid. Your pants size won't help you here. Kilts fit differently, and a few minutes with a tape measure is all it takes to get it right. Three measurements. That's it.

How To Measure For a Kilt

1. Hip Size

Wrap a tape measure around the fullest part of your hips. This tells us whether the kilt will pass over your hips when you put it on — because no matter how well the waist fits, if it won’t go over your hips, it won’t work.

2. Waist Size

Wrap the tape where you plan to wear the kilt. Most people wear it at the navel, but lower is fine too — it’s your call. Measure at a normal breath, not sucked in. Write it down.

Note: If you carry weight around the midsection, wearing the kilt at the navel tends to give a cleaner, more comfortable fit.

3. Drop Length

Measure from your waist (where you’ll fasten the kilt) straight down to where you want the hem to fall. A traditional kilt sits at the middle of the kneecap, but shorter or longer is entirely your choice.

Average drop lengths:

  • Men: 24 inches
  • Women: 20 inches

One Rule to Remember

Do not use your pants size. Men's pants are typically labeled 2–4 inches smaller than the actual body measurement. Order based on what you measure, not what your jeans say.

If you're between sizes, size down for a snug fit or size up for a looser one. Most Kilt Republic kilts include adjustable snap closures to give you about an inch of wiggle room either way.
