Traditional Tartan Kilts
Built to Highland standards. Made for ceremony, heritage, and the occasions that matter.
Traditional kilts are woven tartan, knife-pleated, and fastened with leather straps — the same construction that’s been the standard for centuries. If you’re dressing for a wedding, Highland games, or a formal event, start here.
Traditional Kilts Done Right
A traditional kilt isn’t complicated — but the construction details matter. Woven tartan fabric, deep knife pleats at the rear, and leather strap-and-buckle closures at the waist and hip. That’s the standard. Every traditional kilt at Kilt Republic is built to it.
What to expect:
- Woven tartan fabric — wool or acrylic, depending on the series
- Knife-pleated construction — structured pleats that hang clean and hold their shape
- Leather strap and buckle closures — adjustable at both waist and hip
- Clan and universal tartans available — from Black Watch and Royal Stewart to custom clan patterns
- One of the widest size ranges available — waist sizes from 24″ to 76″, measured to kilt sizing
Wool vs Acrylic — Which Should You Choose
Wool is the traditional choice — heavier, warmer, and more formal in appearance. Acrylic is lighter, more affordable, and easier to care for. Both are knife-pleated and built to the same construction standard.
If you’re buying for a one-time formal event, acrylic is a smart call. If you plan to wear it regularly or want the authentic feel, go wool.

Sizing a Traditional Kilt
Traditional kilts are sized by waist and drop length — not by pants size. Measure your natural waist (at or near the navel), your hips, and your drop length before ordering. Full instructions in our Kilt Size Guide.
